Jacquie's Diary for 20th May 2008
Hi everyone, Sorry I am so late with the diary this week, we have had a few problems, and I didn't have the time to write the diary. But on with it now …
Monday After I had finished feeding Lew went off to get the glass for Nicoletta's door but couldn't find any. Silly, isn't it, he couldn't find anywhere to buy glass, several window firms but they couldn't sell him a piece of glass. We started collecting the duck eggs for the incubator this morning they have to be kept at room temperature before incubating; our eggs are usually kept cooler. I collected a load of weeds for the pigs while Sian and Woody cleaned out the kid's pen. This afternoon Lew and Woody put up another length of fence but weather stopped play. About four o'clock we could see another thunderstorm coming our way. It was race around getting washing in, bringing dogs in, opening doors for goats to get in and covering the little chicks. After dinner Sian and Woody took the dogs for a walk they came back very muddy and had to sleep in the awning on the blanket but they had enjoyed the race around.
Tuesday It was a bright start to the day the birds were singing away. There are several skylark nests in our wheat and we see them hovering in the sky. Duddles, the brown kid, would not eat his breakfast but not to worry he made up for it at lunchtime, he drank half a litre of milk. Our first poppy appeared today, I grabbed the camera and took a photograph before the goats ate it. Lew went to Medgidia to look for glass, this time he was successful. Then he was off to get the feed. Because Sian, Woody and I were busy feeding Lew went down to the family with their Tuesday delivery and the glass. Cristi, her nephew, works on construction, so he will fit the glass. Nicoletta's youngest (at home), Andrea, toddled over to be played with, so Lew was there some time. The water went off this evening, people are watering their gardens.
Wednesday It was a bright, sunny start to the day, the temperature rose to 30C this afternoon. The water was off until about nine and when it did come back the pressure was so low the water just dribbled out. This meant feeding took all morning. We are considering getting a proper fridge this year because of the amount of milk we will be getting, the yoghurt and cheese we will make, I started rearranging the 'kitchen in the awning' to make room, giving things a good clean as I went along. Lew saw Laura, from the family, in town; she was getting her ID card because she has just had her fifteenth birthday, Lew gave her the money she needed.
Thursday Lew wasn't feeling too good and fencing is a job for two people so Woody decided he would start cutting the weeds and grass to make hay. He hadn't used an industrial strimmer before but he soon got the hang of it. We did warn him it is powerful and will cut through the fence like butter. Sian and I collected the cut weeds for the pigs; they thought it was their birthday. In fact we were working in the garden all day and I am beginning to go brown again. I warned Sian and Woody to go careful with the sun it is powerful even though it is May.
Friday After feeding this morning Sian and I headed for town, we needed to do the weekend shopping and we wanted to look at fridges. Lew had seen one kind in the leaflets we have from Metro, I had seen another one, and I wanted to have a look at both. Sian and I fell in love with one of the double door kind with the cold drinks and ice dispenser; we drooled for five minutes. Then we became serious; actually they haven't a great deal of capacity. I decided it would be better to look when Lew was with me. Lew rang to say the water was off again and could we bring in some for drinking.
Saturday the water was on first thing but went off again about 8.15, came back mid morning. Sian spent the day tidying the front 'garden', cutting the overgrown 'lawn' and the chicks enjoyed the greens. Woody was working in the bigger garden. This evening we watched the football match on the television; Sian and Woody were shouting for Cardiff, Lew and I were shouting for Portsmouth. Panda was found guarding a mouse hole; he was sitting there for hours.
Sunday Sian and Woody did the feeding this morning. Lew and I had to pop into town.
What's been happening in the village this week? The planter has been out again this week, I think this is very late. The people have stared working in their fields. Well I think that's all the news from Siminoc this week … So I'll say cheerio for now …
